Teaching Philosophy

 

I believe in providing a well-rounded musical education that is steeped in fundamentals, repertoire, and chamber music experience. No matter what my students’ career goals, I want them to be the best clarinetists and artists within their abilities. I tailor the method of instruction depending on the individual’s goals, whether they might be to have a career as an orchestral musician, a pedagogue, a band director, or to create their own unique musical path. My previous students have found success winning orchestral positions, playing with great orchestras such as the Cincinnati Symphony, performing with professional chamber ensembles, and teaching music on faculty in higher education. Whatever the students’ future aspirations, I want them to find artistic fulfillment and excellence in whatever they do.

The clarinet studio at the University of Arizona offers the benefit of individualized study and personal attention. Students have the opportunity to have their learning experience tailored to their needs and career goals. The clarinet studio is a supportive environment where students have the social support to encourage each other in personal growth and development. Studio classes are offered weekly with an abundance of performance opportunities and topics such as orchestral repertoire, career development, entreprenuership, reeds, new music, and performance anxiety. Students are encouraged to be creative, entrepreneural, goal-oriented, and collaborative. They also have the opportunity of attending many live performances and working with many world-class faculty and guest artists, as well as access to a state-of-the-art recording studio.

University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music

 

The mission of the Fred Fox School of Music is to prepare students as musicians, scholars, and teachers, and to provide the community with performance, scholarship, and education.

 

The University of Arizona has offered instruction in music since the late 1800's. Today, the Fred Fox School of Music ranks among the country's foremost institutions of higher education in music. A nationally and internationally recognized faculty of artists and scholars provides instruction, inspiration, and guidance to the School's approximately 400 music majors. Fred Fox School of Music graduates hold significant teaching, performing, and administrative positions throughout the country and abroad. In the years ahead, The University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music will continue to play an important role in the training of performing artists, teachers, and scholars.

The School offers a wide variety of degree programs and musical experiences, and presents over 300 concerts and recitals each year. Performing ensembles tour both within and outside the state. Internationally known artists, scholars, and clinicians are brought to the campus for concerts, workshops, lectures, clinics, and master classes.

 

Scholarships / Resources

 

The UA Fred Fox School of Music has a very well-developed and diverse scholarship program. Your completed UA Application and Fred Fox School of Music Application and Audition serve as your application for scholarship consideration.

 

There are a variety of ways in which financial assistance packages can be put together for students. These awards range from State of Arizona-based tuition remissions to Fellowships and privately endowed scholarships. The Fred Fox School of Music Scholarship Committee endeavors to make awards to deserving students by April of each year after reviewing all recommendations following auditions and interviews by the various faculty panels, taking into account the needs of the Fred Fox School of Music.

 

The successful student will demonstrate a high level of music accomplishment on a given instrument or voice, along with an admirable academic record and educational aptitude.

 

The clarinet studio offers a unique assistantship for a graduate-level student to be part of the resident ensemble, the Fred Fox Graduate Wind Quintet. This is a fantastic opportunity to have the costs of education covered and be awarded a regular stipend to play in a fantastic, serious chamber ensemble. In addition, the clarinet studio also has a teaching assistantship that is awarded to a deserving graduate assistant, who will assist Professor Glazier in teaching and administrative duties. Other assistantship opportunities are available at the Fred Fox School of Music depending on the applicant's strengths and quality of the entrance audition.
